Periodontitis, also known as gum disease, is the inflammation of gum and bone around a tooth,
leading to bone loss. Since teeth are held in place by bone, this can lead to loose teeth and
possibly tooth loss. This bone loss is irreversible.
The aim of gum disease treatment is to stabilise the condition in order to reduce the risk of you
losing more bone and therefore to reduce the risk of losing teeth, where possible.
Here, at Iffley dental, we have a Periodontist who is a
specialist in the assessment and treatment of gum disease.
To begin with we ask you several questions regarding your general and oral health, and the
symptoms you are experiencing, if any. We will then carry out a full periodontal examination and
take X-rays if needed before going through your treatment options.
Initial treatment of gum disease normally includes cleaning of the teeth and gums under local
anaesthetic. This treatment can be carried out by the Specialist Periodontist, hygienist or
general dentist but the appropriate clinician depends on the severity of gum disease and this
will be discussed at your appointment.
A reassessment will be carried out a few months after this initial therapy.
Gum disease treatment has advanced considerably over the past few decades, and depending on the
results of the reassessment, you may benefit from further treatment such as gum disease
surgeries including regeneration of bone around teeth where possible.
The results of your gum disease treatment need to be maintained, and this will be supported by
regular visits to your hygienist.
